He pulled away from his rivals hear the 19 mile mark. Jussi Utrianien of Finland, who recently completed a successful racing season in Australia, finished second. Rono had also won here in 2000. Three-time champion Bruce Deacon of Canada finished fourth, passed by American Rod DeHaven in the final meters before the finish; DeHaven had actually stopped briefly in the 24th mile to rub a leg cramp. Both Deacon and DeHaven fell short of the 2004 Olympic Games "A" qualifying standard of 2:12:00. In the women's race, Tatiana Titova of Russia took the lead late in the race to get the win over Alena Vinitskaya of Belarus --Ed. NOTE II: "Randy Bailey" was listed as the fifth female finisher. Nasty conditions kept times modest. Kenyan Joseph Riri pulled away from South African Makhosonke Fika to get the win. Mark Coogan ended his marathon career with a despairing performance: 2:45:08 for 25th place. After the race Coogan recounted that women's winner Constantina Dita had said "hello" to him as she passed by. "I was too tired to reply," commented Coogan. Coogan did, however, pass world junior record holder, Li Zhu Hong of China near the 20 mile mark; his finish time (if any) was not reported. Dita set an event record oon a new course --Ed. MEN - 1.
